TEACHING, SPEAKING and MENTORING

I am passionate about science and technology and enjoy bringing topics alive with practical demonstrations and real-world examples. I have been involved in outreach, public speaking, teaching, training and lecturing in a number of roles, giving demonstrations in schools, private tuition, tutorial support, and University Lecturing on BEng, MEng and MSc programmes in General Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Clinical Science.

 

Outreach, Public Speaking and Collaborative work
• I have independently given NHS Medical Engineering careers talks at secondary schools from 2009-18
• Invited Assessor for an EDT South East region engineering competition finals 2017
• Co-hosted a 3-day ‘Reach Out’ event at Guy’s Hospital 2015-2016
• Co-hosted and presented an annual ‘Referrers Day’ events at St Thomas’ Hospital 2015-2016
• Organised a cross-faculty networking event at the University of Surrey to explore the scope for collaboration on the theme of movement. The event was attended by 35 academic staff, instigated 9 new PhDs and was cited in the Vice Chancellor’s annual review as a model of collaboration 2013
• Delivered biomechanics training remotely to EU partners on an AAL project aimed at developing a powered exoskeleton 2012
• Represented the Centre for Biomedical Engineering during UCAS open days 2009-11
• Organised and ran an inter-faculty seminar series at the University of Surrey with the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences to explore scope for collaboration around NHS training 2009
• Organised and delivered the Centre for Biomedical Engineering contribution to the Headstart programme 2008
• Supported and developed a Chemistry Roadshow delivered to schools in Devon, supported by The Royal Institution of Great Britain 2004
• Supported micromouse competitions for schools at the University of Plymouth 1999-2002

As a cadet in the Air Training Corps (1989-1993)
I delivered induction training for new cadets, teaching dress and discipline, principles of flight, navigation and map reading
I practiced and taught rifle drill and full ceremonial drill
Completed training for .22 No 8 Rifle and the L98 A1 Cadet General Purpose Rifle
Completed the Third International ‘Frome Falcons’ Medal March (40km)
Completed training and gained a VHF Radio Operator Certificate
Completed training for the Initial Gliding Training Certificate
